Pie is a common grub among people from different walks of life in "Game of Thrones." From lavish pies served in Castles of lords and ladies in Westeros, to Dothraki blood pies in Essos, characters in the series clearly have a craving for fillings enclosed in pastry and baked to perfection.
Several types of pies were mentioned in George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, from which the HBO TV show is based on. According to Ice and Fire Wikia, these pies are: kidney pie, lamprey pie, pigeon pie, pork pie, strawberry pie, beef-and-bacon pie, venison pie, onion pie, cheese-an-onion pie, blood pie, and a wedding pie served in the Purple Wedding, as pictured below.
“‘If I could fly, I’d be back at Castle Black eating a pork pie,’ said Sam.” – A Clash of Kings
Natalie Uy of Obsessive Cooking Disorder chronicled her try at baking a Medieval pork pie from the GOT Cookbook titled "A Feast of Ice and Fire."
The pastry dough is made with flour, water, butter, egg yolks and an optional pinch of saffron. The filling requires onions, ground pork, crushed crackers, barbecue sauce, honey, apple, cheese, and flavored with poultry seasoning and cumin.
Natalie used a six-inch cake pan, resulting in a nice, rustic-looking pork pie that Sam would surely adore!
"Moon Boy mounted his stilts and strode around the tables in pursuit of Lord Tyrell's ludicrously fat fool Butterbumps, and the lords and ladies sampled roast herons and cheese-and-onion pies." - A Storm of Swords
Karen of Lavender and Lovage has a great recipe for a traditional British cheese and onion (and potato) pie.
She used a basic shortcrust pastry recipe which calls for both butter and vegetable fat. The pie is filled with grated Cheddar cheese, grated onions, cream cheese, English mustard powder, mashed potatoes, and egg.
Karen suggests the pie to be served with salad and chutney.
"As she shares secrets, romanticizes the knights she's seen, and ponders why some things seem not to fit into the fairy tales she grew up with, her mood is made all the better by sharing a strawberry pie with a friend." - A Game of Thrones
Like Sansa, anyone's mood will surely lift up with a bite of this strawberry rhubarb hand pie from Badger Kitchen. The crust is not just your regular pastry. It uses a combination of all-purpose flour and rye flour, mixed with sugar, butter, water, and cardamon.
The filling is packed with flavor - diced rhubarb and quartered strawberries mixed with corn starch and sugar, and seasoned with cardamon and nutmeg.
These hand pies are so rich and flavorful. Not to mention, the red filling is so vibrant, they can pass up for Dothraki blood pies! Of course, blood pies are supposed to have dark, almost black filling. But the bright scarlet hue of the strawberries and rhubarb can certainly play up the gore in your viewing party!
TIP: Using a silicone mat will help bake the hand pies evenly, without burnt patches at the bottom.
