When gorging on chips, most people immediately reach for a jar of nacho cheese dip to add flavor to the crunchy snack. But with most store-brought cheese dips laden with preservatives and empty calories, you'd be much better off with these healthy Mediterranean diet inspired dips that are just as flavorful.
Let's start off with this creamy dip from Maria and Josh of Two Peas and Their Pod. The recipe calls for fat-free Greek yogurt and avocado, which is rich in healthy oils.
1/2 cup plain fat-free Greek yogurt
2 ripe avocados, peeled and seeded
1 clove garlic, minced
3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
1 tablespoon finely chopped seeded jalapeño pepper
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
Salt and ground black pepper, to taste
Pita chips, tortilla chips, cut up veggies-for serving
The jalapeño pepper, garlic and cumin gives the dip a spicy kick, while the cilantro and lime juice wakes up the palate.
Another flavorful dip is this red pesto bean dip from Fuss Free Flavours. Made with sundried tomatoes and red pesto, this dip is creamy and rich with a deep roasted tomato flavor.
Sour Cream & Red Pesto Bean Cream Dip from Fuss Free Flavours
1 can (400g) white beans - such as cannellini - drained and rinsed
Juice of half a lemon
3 heaped dsp sour cream
100g red pesto
plump sundried tomatoes - drained
1 tsp chilli sauce - to taste
Salt & pepper - to taste
Though there are a lot of store-brought hummus in the market, this homemade version that uses sunflower seed butter is a great twist on the classic recipe. The sunflower butter gives it a hint of nutty and toasty flavors.
1 can garbanzo beans
1/4 cup sunflower seed butter
3 tablespoons lemon juice
2 minced garlic cloves
½ teaspoon salt plus more to taste
Olive oil and salted roasted sunflower seeds for garnish
If you're making homemade hummus, why not go all the way and make your pita chips as well? It's actually much easier than you think. Best of all, you can modify the chips depending on your taste just by adding a few dashes of your favorite spices or dried herbs (garlic powder, dried rosemary and chili powder are fine choices).

Sea salt or Kosher salt, to taste
