Lent 2016 Meat-Free Recipe: Meatless "Pigs In Blankets"

Many Catholics stay away from meat during the Lenten season as a form of abstinence. Holy Week or not, more and more people are choosing to go meatless at least once a week, such as the campaign advanced by Meat Free Mondays, aimed at a promoting a healthier lifestyle, while reducing the environmental impact of eating meat.

Today's recipe is a meat-free "Pigs In Blankets" that uses vegan hot dogs.

Meat-free vegetable hot dogs are available in many health food stores. But if you prefer to make your own, Susan Voisin of FatFree Vegan Kitchen has a great recipe for Homemade Veggie Dogs made of pinto beans, vital wheat gluten, and oatmeal, as pictured below.

Whether you're using homemade or store-brought meat-free hotdogs, Jeanne of The Lovin' Forkful's recipe for Vegan Pigs In Blankets is fairly easy to do.

Using instant crescent roll dough, the recipe is made more savory with dijon mustard and vegan cheese.

Jeanne gave easy-to follow step-by-step instructions on cutting the dough into triangles and rolling them up with the vegan dogs inside. This recipe may be meat-free, but's definitely packed with flavor!

Tip: Using silicone baking pan liners in this recipe will make it easier to come off from the baking sheet.
